Therapy Services to Improve Mental Health Conditions
What Is Therapy?
Therapy, also known as psychotherapy or counseling, is a form of treatment centered at relieving emotional distress and mental health problems. Provided by a trained professional, it involves analyzing and gaining perception into life choices and difficulties faced by individuals, couples, or families. Therapy sessions refer to structured meetings between a licensed provider and a patient with a goal of improving some aspect of their life. Psychotherapy encompasses many kinds of treatment and is practiced by a range of clinicians using a variety of strategies. The critical aspect is that the patient works collaboratively with the therapist and can identify improvement and effective change over time. Beginning therapy can be a big step towards being the healthiest version of yourself and the benefits of successful therapy are life changing. Through therapy, you can change self-destructive behaviors and habits, resolve painful feelings, improve your relationships, and more.
What to expect during Therapy?
Though no one can tell you exactly what your therapy process will be like, in all types of therapy you will establish goals and determine what steps are needed to get there. Whether you are in individual, group, or family therapy, your relationship with your therapist is a confidential one and focuses not only on the content of what you talk about, but also the process. The therapeutic process is just as important as the specific issues or concerns you share in therapy.
Overall, you can expect that your therapist will be someone who supports you, listens attentively, forms a healthy and positive experience, gives you appropriate feedback, challenges you to implement positive life changes, and follows ethical guidelines. Good therapy should be tailored to you and your experiences and be entirely customized to your goals and needs. Types of Therapy
There are many different types of therapy. For many people, a well-rounded approach includes many different methods of therapy. While there are over fifty different established therapy techniques the most common types of therapy are:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
- Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)
- Mindfulness- Based (MBCT)
- Client centered therapy
- Psychoanalytic or Psychodynamic Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
Another therapy technique that may be provided is EMDR or Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. EMDR is another talking therapy that has been developed to help people who have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). People who have PTSD may experience intrusive thoughts, memories, nightmares, or flashbacks of traumatic events in their past. EMDR helps the brain reprocess memories of the traumatic event so you can let go of them. This technique does require additional training for the provider.
